The link is to a Business Insider article that shows readers how to access “Subscription Only” articles in the Wall Street Journal or the NY Times without having to be a subscription member (essentially reading paid literature…for free!).

The “how-to” of it all is actually really simple (and awesome especially for a starving college student that wants to stay up-to-date with the same news as the C-level execs).

1. Find a locked article on either newspaper (the Wall Street Journal uses the key symbol).

2. Copy the title of the article.

3. Paste it into Google.

4. Click on the WSJ link to the article through Google.

5. And VOILA! There is the full article on WSJ for your viewing and reading pleasure :)

This Wall Street Journal article tries to define the science behind creativity. Do you work for a tech start-up that keeps beer in the fridge and maintains ping pong table leaderboards? Find out why!

Text 6 Feb How to Eat Shabu Shabu at Home

Recently, a few of my coworkers and I have started a bit of a routine at work: Shabu Shabu once a week. Couple that with receiving an induction cooktop last Christmas and I knew it was about time to have my first shabu shabu meal at home.

I did extensive research aka Google and the most helpful guide came from a blog post by bibimblog. Below is my own hotpot experience. Everything was purchased at 99 Ranch and the $50 went to hotpot the first day and then a spicy miso ramen the day after.

First things first, our ingredients:

In your pot: Soak kombu (dried kelp) for about fifteen minutes and dried shiitake. Add a spoonful of miso and (if you want it spicy) add Ning Chi Spicy Pot Sauce (to your desired spicyness level).

While your pot is boiling, cut your napa cabbage in thirds and rinse along with the spinach and mushrooms. Array on your table with the rest of the ingredients and enjoy!

After you’re full, drain all the ingredients so that only the broth remains and you can use that to make spicy miso ramen the next day!

Text 1 Feb MMMORPG

I want to coin this before anyone takes it. After a check on Google and Urban Dictionary, this does not yet exist.

Mobile Massively Multiplayer Online Role Player Game (MMMORPG)

The only game out there right now that fits the bill is Order and Chaos for iPhone/iPad/Kindle/…

It’s an MMORPG that can be played on the phone. More details to come!

Text 30 Jan 16 notes Best Romantic Dates in Berkeley

This post is for anyone planning to take a girl out on a date in Berkeley. After Telegraph burned down, I wanted to highlight a few fond memories at Cal in case any other area suffers a tragic fate.

1. Berkeley Rose Gardens - Imagine the sun is setting. You’re sitting on a rustic bench with the smell of roses drifting to your nose. Between you and the girl of your dreams is a box of Cheeseboard pizza and smuggled in your backpack is some wine or champagne to go with the view and the food. My hipster roommate took me here on one of our girl dates but seriously, deep down, I wouldn’t have minded if a guy swept me off my feet and took me to this wonderland for a day. I’ve been here at night and there’s not much to see but it’s also a great place to go for a walk as long as you have a flashlight. Best time to go: Sunset!

Rose Gardens on Euclid

2. Grizzly Peak - All right, I’m a sucker for gorgeous views. And grizzly peak tops them (a close second would be Indian Rock). If you want to have a one on one with friends or a little alone time, there’s nothing like Grizzly Peak and a thermos of hot chocolate to set the mood.

3. College Ave (Trattoria la Siciliana and Ici) - The best part about Trattoria la Siciliana are the close spaces, amazing bread and ambiance that goes along with it. It’s the perfect dinner and dessert combo to make an evening really special. Once you finish a scrummy Italian dinner, walk down College toward Ici for some amazing Earl Grey ice cream to top off your palette.

4. Shattuck (Chez Panisse and Love at First Bite) -  Nothing says romantic and high class more than a dinner for two at Chez Panisse on Shattuck. Follow it by red velvet or green tea cupcakes at Love at First Bite and you’ll score at least a kiss from that girl for giving her a night to remember.

5. Memorial Glade at Cal - Looking for somewhere to watch the stars and too lazy to head up the Big C? Then just walk over to Memorial Glade! Warning, you MAY be splashed by an ill-timed venture when the sprinklers go off. Terrace Cafe above Bechtel Auditorium is also a great place to talk seeing as there are cozy little benches to go off into and flowers hanging from wooden trellises above.

6. Dinner and a Movie (Angeline’s and Shattuck Cinemas) - I die for Angeline’s Louisiana Kitchen hush puppies. If you’re willing to wait, spend some time here and then head over to Shattuck Cinemas where they have love seats in the upper balcony that you could literally sink into.

Hopefully, this will give you some food for thought on where to go to have some fun in Berkeley. The best toolkit when planning for dates will probably be yelp. And the above items can also be done with girlfriends or if you’re hankering for a man date! Creme Brulee at La Rose Bistro with my roommate will never get old :)

What are your favorite date ideas in Berkeley??

Text 29 Jan Why should you care about the MSCI Indices?

Let’s go back to the infographic I created earlier this week about the country breakdown of the MSCI Indices. My initial response to seeing a color-coordinated wall of text would be ‘Why should I care?.’

If you ever plan to invest in securities, then you’ll need a roadmap of sorts. The MSCI helps to provide a guide to investing in countries you’ve never given more thought to other than that it was on a map you saw back in fourth grade.

Our good friends the NASDAQ, DOW and the S&P are benchmarks for tracking American securities, however the MSCI goes beyond that. The MSCI All Country World Index (MSCI ACWI) provides a large universe of securities you can choose from to get the diversity you need in your portfolio. Keep in mind that the ACWI includes developed and emerging countries, NOT frontier markets. A country falls into one of the three categories (developed, frontier or emerging) based on its market cap and liquidity. Generally, countries with a large market cap and high liquidity belong in the developed countries category while the smaller market cap and lower liquidity countries fall in the frontier markets.

Soon I’ll be sending out information on another part of benchmark construction and that is sector and industry breakdown.

Photo 26 Jan My first infographic. Rudimentary yes, but the goal is to have enough to create material content for anyone that wanted a quick introduction to finance topics. The above shows all the countries included in the MSCI indexes. The three benchmarks above were created by MSCI and a variation of the country make-up above results in other indexes from the company.
Clicking on the graphic links to the MSCI (Morgan Stanley Capital International) website which is a trusted resource for benchmark information. The best part is performance history for all of their benchmarks going as far back as the inception of the product. It can be imported into Excel providing even more freedom to play with the numbers. (More on Excel at another time!)
